The Three Year Old Appointment

My parenting experience feels wholly validated by a recent trip to the doctor's. A simple phrase from the nurse, "That's okay for a 3 year old appointment" has affirmed that we are indeed handling a little person in a phase of life with a set of rules entirely to its own. For example, she was taking Turner's blood pressure. Apparently it is 76 over something because he moved around too much and "That's okay for a 3 year old appointment." She put the super cool 3-d glasses on him and played a game where he needed to point to the hand that held the picture. At first, she asked him what picture he saw and he kept saying "a square," referring to the actual frames in her hand and not the pictures at all. Then, after a few correct points, he decided to point with both hands at the same time - one to each frame and "That's okay for a 3 year old appointment." Apparently, 3 year olds can get two wrong and still pass. I like that rule too.

Today, I felt like saying this new favorite phrase of mine when Turner had pancakes for breakfast and dinner, "That's okay for the 3 year old appointment." Also the phrase came to mind, when he decided to play "polar bear" in our bed just as I was getting Jane to sleep and doing the delicate transfer into the bassinet. I also thought of it yesterday when after Turner went to the potty Matt had to wipe his butt and then his legs and yes even the bottoms of his feet. It's got a nice ring to it - "That's okay for the 3 year old appointment."

As much as he entertains, he also warms my heart. Today as I was making the second batch of pancakes, Jane was a little grumpy. I asked Turner to get one of his guys to cheer her up. He returned with Skunky and his Alligator - these are his two most favorite guys. Jane lit up as Turner pressed the alligator into her nose and rested Skunky on her head. And that's just the kind of guy he is.

Much love to all.
